The scenic Town of Sherman, incorporated in October 1802, is located in the Housatonic Valley at the northern end of Candlewood Lake. Sherman is a rural community of 23.4 square miles, with a population est. at 3,581 (per the 2010 census) and is the northernmost town in Fairfield County. Named for Roger Sherman - a shoemaker, land surveyor, lawyer, and Statesman - Sherman separated from the Town of New Fairfield in 1802. Mr. Sherman was the only American to sign four important historical documents: The Continental Association of 1774, The Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and The Federal Constitution.
Today, Sherman boasts a new Library, a new Emergency Services Facility, a renovated Senior Center, and one of the only Department of Public Works wash stations in the region. There are three well-maintained Town parks for recreation. At Veterans Field, residents enjoy the ½ mile walking track, baseball and soccer fields, a basketball court, and state-of-the-art tennis courts. There is a soccer field, a community garden, and hiking trails at Colonial Park. And Volunteer Park provides additional soccer and baseball fields. Sherman children attend the Sherman School from Kindergarten through 8th grade, and may attend the public high school of their choice. Candlewood Lake is a major draw for summer fun. Sherman has over 9.3 miles of shoreline. There are over 6,000 acres of open space in town. Notable businesses / attractions include: The American Pie Company is a popular restaurant for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, serving a variety of tasty American classics, plus home to a renowned bakery; The local IGA (Independent Grocers Association) sells groceries and sundries, and has a deli; Sacred Grounds Coffee Roasters specializes in 100% organic and fair trade coffee; White Silo Farm is a small specialty winery, with wine produced and bottled on premises from farm-grown fruit, hosting wine and food tasting; The Sherman Players holds performances of musicals and plays year round, held in an historic converted church known as the Sherman Playhouse; Little Munchkins provides day care for children aged 6 months to 12 yrs.
