The Town Assessor's Office is responsible for the discovery, listing, and equitable valuation of all real and personal property within the Town of Sherman in accordance with Connecticut State Statutes for the annual production of the Grand List.
Description of Services and Fees
The assessor and staff administer state and local programs of tax relief & apply exemptions (blind, disabled, veterans, fireman’s abatement etc.) as permitted by state law.
Tax Relief for Elderly Homeowners and Totally Disabled Homeowners:
Property owners over 65 years or totally disabled, who have not filed with the Assessor and meet the following qualifications, may file the form prescribed by the Tax Commission between February 1, 2025 and May 15, 2025 to be eligible for tax relief under Connecticut Statutes.
To qualify:
- Own and occupy real property in Sherman as of 10-1-2024.
- Must be 65 years old by 12-31-2024, or be considered 100% disabled.
- Have a total income that should not exceed $55,100, married or $45,200, single. Total income includes taxable, non-taxable, and Social Security.
- Meet all other requirements of the Connecticut State Statutes.
A Town program is also available.

- You must apply for the State Tax Relief Program.
- Your total income should not exceed $42,900, married or $35,200 single. Total income includes taxable, non-taxable, and Social Security.
- The property for which the credit is claimed must be the legal domicile of such person, and be occupied more than 187 days of each year.
- You must meet all requirements noted above for the State program.
Those who qualified last year need not reapply.
All forms are available in the Sherman Assessor’s Office.
Town of Sherman Additional Tax Credit For Veterans:
Sherman Veterans who meet the requirements provided by section 12-81(19) and (22) and meet certain income requirements will be eligible for Town's additional veterans exemption. Maximum income requirement is as follows: - Single - $52,700 - Income includes Social Security - Married - $58,900 - Income includes Social Security Applications are available in the Assessor’s Office.

NEW: Town of Sherman Additional Tax Credit For Disabled Veterans:
Sherman Veterans who meet the requirements provided by section 12-81(f)b and meet certain income requirements will be eligible for additional disabled veterans exemption. Maximum income requirement is as follows:
- Single - $64,400 - Income includes Social Security -
- Married - $128,000 - Income includes Social Security
Applications are available in the Assessor’s Office. Filing period is February 1 thru October 1.
Motor Vehicle:
To receive credit for Motor vehicles Sold, Stolen, Salvaged or Registered Out of State one of the following proofs are required: - Receipt from DMV for return of license plates. - Copy of "bill of sale" or "transfer of title" - Statement from insurance company stating when insurance was cancelled and reason for cancellation. - Copy of "accident/police report". - Copy of out-of-state registration. - Proof of date you moved out of state, i.e., lease, deed, and utility bill. (Must show new address)
Revaluation:
The Assessor’s office conducts a revaluation of all Real Estate as defined by State Statutes every 5 years. Sherman’s last revaluation was conducted October 1, 2023.
The Mill Rate for the 2023 Grand List is 16.36.
