The Sherman Library is presenting a new art show:”E PLURIBUS UNUM” – USA Flags by Muriel Stockdale. Since 2003 Muriel has continually created additions to her culturally celebrative art series of USA flags. This selection of flags is inspiring and thought provoking. The artist's reception will be held on Friday, April 4, 2025 from 6 - 8pm. The show will be on display at the Sherman Library from April 4 through May 7, 2025 both at the Library and on their website, www.ShermanLibrary.org.
The diverse people who coexist in this great country inspire the project, which is entitled E PLURIBUS UNUM (our US motto which means Out of Many One). Each piece is created out of multiple materials and techniques to honor a specific culture from somewhere in the world. Gifts that people of the world have brought to all of us here in the USA are highlighted in different materials and specific motifs.
Muriel Stockdale was born and raised in England. She moved to Long Island, NY in 1967. She began early in entertainment as a stage manager for theater. In the 1970’s she received a federal grant to form a theater company in rural Vermont. Over the last 40 years, while maintaining a successful career in costume design, she has directed or designed several shows in NYC and in New England, performed onstage, crewed backstage, managed costume shops, designed and painted scenery, and taught aspiring designers. Currently, her novel GABRIEL BORN is being produced as a podcast.
