Don Lowe First Selectman Column 03/17/25
I’m writing this on St. Patrick’s Day and wishing everyone good luck and many blessings to come. Though I’m mostly of Norwegian heritage, I have always loved this holiday. Or at least I love celebrating this holiday. To be clear, its morning and I haven’t started celebrating yet.
Just a reminder that Public Works will be road sweeping starting Monday, March 24. This will take about two weeks to complete. Try to keep your vehicles parked off the road so that they don’t need to sweep around it. If you see the sweeper truck on the road, please slow down and pass carefully.
Also, this time of year brings about many opportunities for graduating high school seniors to apply for grants and scholarships. The Sherman Veterans Association sponsors the Walter B. Wriston Scholarship, which offers up to two $1000 scholarships for deserving students as per SVA’s criteria. Information on this can be found online.
In addition, The Sherman Higher Education Fund (SHEF) has several scholarships available including the Mary Hadlow Scholarship award for good citizenship and community volunteer efforts. Any high school senior can apply and also anyone who is currently enrolled higher education is eligible.
SHEF also offers grants that any Sherman high school senior or anyone currently enrolled in higher education can apply for. To receive those grants, one simply needs to prove residence in Sherman and prove that he or she is enrolled at some institution of higher learning – including trade schools. Descriptions of these scholarships and grants are on the SHEF website.
The Board of Selectmen is holding a Special Meeting this Saturday, March 22 to extend our budget work as we finalize decisions for what we ultimately present to the public to vote on via referendum. The budget referendum will be held on Saturday, May 3 in Charter Hall from 8am to 8pm.
St. Patrick’s Day brings about a lot of talk of four-leaf clovers and good luck, kissing the Blarney Stone and all that it brings, and, of course, in general, the luck of the Irish. Thomas Jefferson also put a lot of stock in luck. He once said, “I’m a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it." Have a wonderful week!
